The BIMA 100 recognises the industry’s most influential, pioneering and changemaking people
Lisa lives and breathes digital sociology. She works at the intersection of technology, media, social theory and social life. She creates sociotechnical frameworks and methods that support ethical best practice and is a passionate thought-leader in the field of tech ethics, the digital humanities and diversity.
Lisa has been recognised in the ‘Champions for Change’ category. Her work always features themes of diversity and inclusion, the value that the social sciences can bring to the technology industry (what many are now terming ‘the rise of the digital humanities’) and the impact that technology has on people and planet (what many call ‘tech ethics’). The new methods, frameworks and processes she has introduced to colleagues, clients and her students has changed hearts and minds and transformed working practices across private, public and education sectors.
For more than a decade, she’s studied and written about the relationship between technology, information and society. During this time, Lisa has also presented keynotes and run workshops to audiences from a wide range of business backgrounds on the impact, opportunities and challenges of emerging technologies.
Lisa currently holds the position of Head Of User Research at Methods, working with the UK government on the digital transformation of public services. She has transformed how user research is conducted in the emerging technology space by creating a sociotechnical process (which she’s open-sourced) and a Social Impact Canvas (a planning tool to help map the unintended consequences of technology) in order to support multi-disciplinary teamwork and put ethics at the heart of tech creation.
Her work has influenced thinking at the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Justice and NHS, led to keynotes around the world and being featured on podcasts; most notably BBC’s Tomorrow’s World and Sleepwalkers for HowStuffWorks.
Lisa is also an Associate Lecturer in the Institute of Management Studies at Goldsmiths (University of London) and at Cardiff University in the School of Journalism, PR and Cultural Studies. She is also a visiting teacher at Plymouth University and at Sup de Pub in Paris. Her teaching area of expertise is:
- Digital Research Methods
- Design Thinking
- Campaign Analytics
- Social Media Brand Strategy
Lisa’s research projects with Goldsmiths and King’s College have seen her collaborate with To Play For, IpSoft, Adobe, Mindshare and Rackspace. Her research covers a range of technologies including AI, chatbots, VR and AR, and wearable technology and has gained international coverage with CNN, BBC, Fast Company, Campaign, Techcrunch, Forbes and others.
