PRESS RELEASE:

The Department of Health & Social Care has awarded Methods Analytics, working with colleagues across Methods Group, the contract to deliver a new digital service supporting the roll-out of Medical Examiners to scrutinise non-coronial deaths. This service will improve the quality and accuracy of the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death, national data on avoidable mortality and contribute to improved patient safety.

“We welcome the announcement from the Department of Health and Social Care outlining the next stage for the implementation of medical examiners from April 2019. Medical examiners will be ideally placed to detect, monitor and escalate concerns. This is the culmination of a great deal of work by the College over many years.” – Professor Jo Martin, President, The Royal College of Pathologists

The benefits of medical examiners will be far-reaching and touch the work of numerous agencies. The DHSC states that the key aims for the introduction of medical examiners are to:

  • introduce a system of effective medical scrutiny applicable to all non-coronial deaths
  • enable medical examiners to report matters of a clinical governance nature to support local learning and changes to practice and procedures
  • provide information on public health surveillance (as requested by directors of public health)
  • increase transparency for the bereaved and offer them an opportunity to raise any concerns
  • improve the quality and accuracy of medical certificates of cause of death
  • link the introduction of medical examiners with enhancements to related systems, especially data on avoidable mortality, generated from the Learning from Deaths programme.

The programme requires a significant digital transformation through the creation of an end-to-end service, replacing manual processes & improving user experience, quality & efficiency. The Department for Health and Social Care require a skilled multidisciplinary team to design, test, iterate & build an end-to-end digital service that meets these user needs.

“We are pleased to have been selected to deliver this crucial service which will ensure consistency of approach and a record of scrutiny by Medical Examiners.  Methods Analytics’ understanding of the healthcare landscape and Methods Group’s credibility in digital service design to GDS standards were key factors in winning this contract in a competitive tender situation.  This is a great example of leveraging the strength and depth of skills across the Methods Group.”– Simon Swift, MD Methods Analytics.
